The Cause

War Child works with the most vulnerable women and children, including those escaping ISIS in Iraq, extreme violence in Syria, famine and conflict in South Sudan, and years of violence in Afghanistan. Through programs that provide access to education, opportunity and justice, War Child gives those whose lives have been devastated by war the possibility of a better tomorrow. We strive to empower women and defend their rights so mothers can give their children a safe start in life and give their communities the best chance of a brighter, peaceful future.

War Child’s programming is rooted in the belief that for a community to properly recover from conflict, it must drive the process. We assist communities in their development and as they create their own environment where childhood can thrive. This is vital not only for the young people who attend our programs but also for our staff, 95% of whom are recruited locally. In this way, we work with communities to break the cycle of poverty and violence.

Where childhood thrives, war does not.

Make a generous gift today

Help us re-imagine a world full of possibilities—a world where all mothers can watch their children play and laugh and just be kids, and where all girls have the opportunity to go to school. Please show your support for women and children living with war today.

2017 What if...? Gala

“I love what War Child Canada does, I think they are an amazing organization. That 95% of all the staff are on the ground and in the countries and communities where they serve—I think that’s really powerful and important.” – Sarah McLachlan

“Everybody is surely aware of all the civil wars and wars that have been going on and all the children who have been affected by it. [Samantha Nutt] has been doing this for a while and she really does deserves support for it.” Margaret Atwood

“Empathy is feeling someone else’s pain—and that’s amazing—but compassion is moving on it.” – Chantal Kreviazuk

On November 6, 2017, War Child hosted 500 guests at our first ever gala. We teamed up with three powerful Canadian voices: Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk and Ruth B. to raise much-needed funds for War Child’s work supporting vulnerable women and children in war-affected communities around the world. Hosted by ET Canada’s Sangita Patel, and featuring stories from our Founder, Dr. Samantha Nutt and our Country Director from Iraq, Galawezh Bayiz, the evening was a resounding success. We raised $425,000 for our critically important programs.

This would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors, ET Canada and The Globe and Mail; our committee members and volunteers; and of course, our donors. Thank you!
